Proton Acceleration in Co2 Laser-plasma Interactions at Critical Density∗
Over the last several years, the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) mechanism in solid density plasmas produced by a laser pulse has achieved proton energies up to 10’s of MeV and quasi-monoenergetic beams at lower energies. Although solid-target experiments have demonstrated high-charge and low-emittance proton beams, little work has been done with gaseous targets which in principle can ...

متن کاملFour-frame picosecond interferometry system for probing near-critical density CO2 laser-produced plasmas
We describe a four-frame picosecond green laser interferometer developed at the Neptune Laboratory at UCLA. This diagnostic is applied for measuring the dynamics of CO2 laser produced plasmas in a He gas jet. An example of results of the modification of the plasma density profile by the radiation pressure of the laser pulse is presented.
متن کاملDensity and temperature characterization of long-scale length, near-critical density controlled plasma produced from ultra-low density plastic foam
The ability to produce long-scale length (i.e. millimeter scale-length), homogeneous plasmas is of interest in studying a wide range of fundamental plasma processes. We present here a validated experimental platform to create and diagnose uniform plasmas with a density close or above the critical density. The target consists of a polyimide tube filled with an ultra low-density plastic foam wher...
متن کاملRelativistic laser–plasma interactions
By focusing petawatt peak power laser light to intensities up to 1021 W cm−2, highly relativistic plasmas can now be studied. The force exerted by light pulses with this extreme intensity has been used to accelerate beams of electrons and protons to energies of a million volts in distances of only microns. This acceleration gradient is a thousand times greater than in radio-frequency-based acce...
